I downloaded MintPPC four weeks ago. It never installed correctly.

Is that the version that has the problem? Or should the version that I downloaded four weeks ago, work?

Thank you for your help.

The version you downloaded no longer works. I guess you have the 32-bits installer. You have to wait a bit. For 64-bits I have a new test version.

Thank you. Any idea about how long? Also, I am looking for partition software - not gparted since it only works with intel - that will let me find and make sure there is an Apple partion where a choice can be made as to continuing with Apple or going to MintPPC. I have iPartition and Drive Genius 2 that work with PowerPC (not intel), but they don't seem to give enough information. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

I don't know how long it will take to have a new installer. It all depends on when the package is being built on the Debian build machine.

I am not familiar with partition tools under MacOS. The partitioner in the Debian installer works fine.

Thank you. Although the Gparted site only has downloads for intel machines, wicknix says that it can be used with the proper sudo command. I will see what it does.

I am still having significant trouble with logging on. It seems like every time I try to log on the password gets rejected. Any thoughts?

I tried Ubuntu a few days ago. I was able to do a live boot and GParted was available. However, when I tried to install Ubuntu, the partitions on the hard drive got messed up to the place that I had to erase the drive and re-partition it. I was not sure I was going to be able to save the drive without using TestDisk and fdisk to finish the work.

Yesterday I came across the full set of Debian 8.10.0 for powerpc32 and made the CD's. Would that be a good place to start? Could it be updated to MintPPC?

I also found a complete manual for it on the Linux site along with CD's/DVD's. I really need a manual/handbook.

Thanks for your help and best wishes.

I am pretty sure that you can upgrade from debian 8, I did it once:

1. Installation Debian Sid manually:

 2. Installation MintPPC manually:

I got the initial install done and it finished up OK - or so it seemed.

I have a G4, so I used part one of the instructions above with the second file: https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/archive/8.11.0/powerpc/iso-cd/debian-8.11.0-powerpc-lxde-CD-1.iso. I did the following things per the instructions - I selected the 32 bit installation:

#1 32.3 kB Apple driver partition
#2 1.0MB B (flag) boot bootstrap
#3 1.0 GB swap swap swap
#4 39.0 GB ext4 Linux /

When I went to finish the install, the software told me that I needed a New World partition with at least 918200 bytes of space. Not knowing quite what to do, and since the bootstrap partition did have that option, I selected that. I also had no idea how to modify the Apple driver partition if that needed to be done.

However, when I boot while holding down the option key - and I do see the Linux partition as an option, but I can't select it - it never completes the switch to Linux. I think that I need to do the installation again after I find out how to do it right.

Is the choice of operating systems and disks made at the Apple driver partition, or at the bootstrap?

Also, are the names of the partitions critical - such as: swap swap swap? I could not tell exactly what names to use.

When the installation was finishing, it wanted to go to the web to bring in the rest of the information. But upon reading the instructions you provided, it seemed like that probably would not work. The one mirror I tried said that there were no additional pieces of software for my installation.

When I made each partition in the installation process, there were a lot of questions/options to be selected. I was not really certain each time, based on the names in the options, and the names in the instructions, what option was the correct one.

I was also reasonably certain that some free space at the end of the installation was needed, based on the other partitions of the disk (I had previously split the disk into three "disks"). The first "disk" has 10.5.8, The second "disk" has Linux, and the third disk is empty at the present.

The first "disk" had 134.2 Mb of Free Space, and the third "disk" had about 80 Mb of Free Space.

I estimated the Free Space requirement for safety - based on 134.2 Mb -, subtracted that from the remaining Free Space on the Linux "disk" and used that value for the size of the partition holding the operating system, etc.

Sorry for such a long post.

Hope all goes well.

Best wishes,

Neal

I just tried the other file and installed it with the same results. It installed but I can't boot into it with the option key. I have Linux on the second "disk" of the three into which I split the original 300 Gb hard drive. Should it be on the first "disk"?

I have a new way to install MintPPC. You may want to check it out.

I got a bit farther and then the process died at:

Warning: file://cdrom/dists/sid/main/binary-powerpc/Packages.gz was corrupt.

It looks like, although I was able to boot off the CD, it was corrupt.

I seem to have troubles with CD's and DVD's, and the Sawtooth (AGP) G4's are very reluctant (almost impossible) to boot from a USB.
