I own an iMac G5 with an nVidia GeForce graphics card which is not working well with nouveau. After a while the whole screen begins tearing, and then you can't read anything anymore. I have no idea how to fix this problem with the nouveau driver.

My idea was to try the old fashioned xserver-xorg-video-nv driver, which worked fine in older versions of Linux PPC. Well, I built the package and did as was told here but could not get X working. I guess this approach is a dead end because this driver is only compatible with older versions of xorg.

If I find the time, I will built all xorg deb packages from and older version of xorg and see if the nv driver is able to function then.

Maybe someone can tell me in which version of Debian or Ubuntu the nv driver was still working ?

I found some information on the net which says that the nouveau driver does not work with a kernel that has in its configuration 64k pages size. I will make my own kernel now and see if this works.

Debian 7 "Wheezy" was the last to support the xserver-xorg-video-nv driver. Was trying to backport the driver on Jessie (next version up and final official Debian PPC) and now Bullseye/Sid, with no success. Driver installs but just doesn't work 🙁

@kahli88 Yes, I have the same experience. On what type of machine are you trying to get X working? I am building a custom ppc64 kernel for my iMac G5 now.

Did you try the fbdev as driver with KMS turned off and nouveau driver blacklisted ?

In the first link there is also an xorg.conf file with nouveau as driver (iMac G4/800 with Linux MintPPC 11). The first link is my old website mac.linux.be.

Gave it a shot with your xorg, minus higher resolutions and replaced nouveau with fbdev. KMS disabled and nouveau blacklisted. Uninstalled nv driver for good measure. Still can't startx.
